A company hires an agency.
The agency promises growth.
Very little actually changes.

Over the years, I’ve heard this same frustration from business owners of all sizes, time and time again.

At the smaller end, businesses hire individual specialists — social media, ads, web design, photography. Each one delivers a service in isolation. None of it is properly connected to the business as a whole. Even when the work is good, it rarely moves revenue because no one owns the full picture.

At the larger end, agencies talk about strategy, campaigns, and brand awareness. But they often stay well away from the hard work - the testing, the follow-ups, the iteration, the uncomfortable parts that actually drive sales. Results are reported in impressions and engagement, not revenue.

That’s where business owners need to stop and think.

In every other area of life — fixing a car, renovating a house, hiring staff — you assess the person doing the work. You look for proof. You ask how they operate. You decide if you trust them.

Marketing should be no different.

Fancy websites, big promises, and polished presentations don’t grow businesses. Clear thinking does. Someone still has to sit down, understand the numbers, test what works, fix what doesn’t, and stay close to the outcome.

And the truth is this: no agency will ever care about your business more than you do.

Growth starts when you take ownership — when you understand what needs to happen, what success actually looks like, and who is capable of delivering it.

Fancy websites, big promises, and polished presentations don’t grow businesses.

If you find a marketer or partner who is hungry, hands-on, obsessed with results, and willing to be judged on outcomes — keep them. Build around them. Grow together.

But don’t outsource responsibility for growth.

Grab a pencil first.
Then decide who earns the right to help you build.
